Translucent

Translucent is a book-object, made by Bernardo Pereira, with old photolites from t-shirt brand Tozco.

Follows the description of the project and detailing of the assembly, according to the author:
“In a corner of the shelf, there was a roll of photolites, accumulated for several years. Not wanting to throw them away and knowing that a roll in a corner had no use at all, I have decided to cut them in 12×24 centimeter pieces and make a book, which I called translucent. To give depth to sheets to prevent the book to being a mess of transparent sheets printed in black, I have inserted some sheets of tracing paper. The open pages of the book shows some layers of photolite with its tone degraded in shades of gray, by the tracing paper sheets. The overlapping sections of photolite generates incredible results from the random combination of images! For the cover, I bought a thick textured plastic, commonly used in shower doors and carved from behind the word “Translúcido” - translucent in English -, “trans-” in front and “lúcido” in the back, using a rotary tool. Depending on the angle and lighting that you see the cover, the text appears or fade with more or less intensity. For each section of the book, I have gathered six spreads, of which two or three would be sheets of tracing paper, totaling 24 pages for section. I have selected the 23 most interesting photolite sheets, to be used as center spread for each section of the book and randomly divided the other sheets to forme the 23 sections of the book. I have had an enormous difficulty to sew the book, because the photolite sheets are very thick and do not bend very well. In the first attempt, a bad result. I had to undo the sewing, let the sections under pressure for a few days and then sew again, this time with success.”
